Next MSOSUG Meeting

March 9th, 2008 by Andre van Eyssen

Just a reminder that the next meeting of MSOSUG, the Melbourne Solaris / OpenSolaris User Group is coming up,  Wednesday, March 19th.

Usual time and place - 6pm,  Level 7, 476 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.

This time Richard Smith will be talking about Solaris Performance Counter Observation - Richard is one clued in guy about performance tuning, so this alone makes it well worth the visit. In addition,  Richard Spindler will be discussing troubleshooting Jump Start - should be a lively and interactive session there.

Cassini Ethernet & IP Instances on Solaris 10 (at last!)

February 21st, 2008 by Andre van Eyssen

During last night’s MSOSUG, the fact that Cassini (ce) is now working with IP Instances on Solaris 10 popped up. Since there hasn’t been a whole lot of publicity surrounding this I thought I’d drop a quick post here. The patches are 137042-01 and 118777-12, so head over to sunsolve.sun.com and grab it. I know this will be a popular patch for those performing consolidation operations on existing UltraSPARC infrastructure.

Melbourne Solaris / OpenSolaris User Group meeting roundup

December 19th, 2007 by Andre van Eyssen

Another fine MSOSUG this evening - I was most impressed with the questions my SSGD presentation brought up - certainly raised some interesting ideas of what the market may want from a product like SSGD.

The Lustre presentation was an excellent introduction to the subject, and pulled some statistics and benchmarks supporting Lustre. It was also most interesting the hear about the limitations and problems that Linux kernel integration had caused them and how these limits are being removed by their transition to Solaris/ZFS. A very interesting product indeed, and one I look forward to playing with soon.

Nathan’s xVM stuff was excellent, and he gave an inspiring demonstration of Xen virtualisation on Solaris at work - plenty of workload, plenty of action. He handled the questions and prodding from the vmware userbase admirably well, and made a real case for using xVM over other alternatives.

Next one should be in January, availability permitting, where I’ll be having a chat about Custom JumpStart and JET.

Slides will be posted soon!

Melbourne Solaris / OpenSolaris User’s Group - December.

December 8th, 2007 by Andre van Eyssen

Just a quick reminder, since some people aren’t getting the mailouts:

19th December, 7/476 St Kilda Rd, 6:00pm.

The lineup so far includes yours truly having a yarn about SSGD, Nathan talking about Xen/XVM (and giving some demos!) and Atul Vidwansa talking about Lustre.

I should have some OpenSolaris starter kit media to give away on the night, so there’s free stuff and everything. Not to mention pizza.
